Black and Decker is a well-known brand in the UK and they manufacture affordable, good-quality garden tools and equipment that can be found in most garden centres and DIY stores.

But how good is their cordless battery strimmer? Does it do everything it should?

What’s great and not-so-great about their most popular strimmer?

I recently put several cordless strimmers to the test and as Black and Decker has over thousand of reviews on Amazon, I included it in my test.

Discover how this strimmer performed and whether I recommend it or not.

What’s in the Box:

Key Points:

This Black and Decker grass strimmer (model ST1820PC) is targeted at domestic gardeners who require an edging wheel to support the device as they cut perfectly neat lines around their lawn.

Switching from regular strimming to edging is effortless – just twist the shaft and you’re good to go.

While the RRP is slightly above average, it’s often sold at discounts of up to 50%.

Model #: STC1820PC

Weight: 2.6kg.

Battery: 18v – 2.0Ah.

Cutting Width: 28cm.

Type: Cord 0.65mm (automatic).

Edger Wheel: Yes.

Warranty: 2yrs.

Length: 1m extending to 1.2m.

Safety Guard: Yes.

Flower Guard/Guage: No.

I paid £89 for this Black and Decker strimmer and this included a 40% discount off the RRP (From Amazon in August 2022).

1) The edging wheel makes edging easy, effortless and precise. If you have lots of edging to do, you’ll appreciate this feature.

2) The cord deploys automatically, there’s no need to tap the device onto the ground to release it and no fiddly buttons either.

3) The general build quality – this Black and Decker cordless strimmer felt sturdy and chunky.

4) Battery life was good with just over 30 mins of use before I had to recharge it.

5) The ECO setting reduces the power and is perfect for strimming over light grass and extends the battery life.

6) The cutting width is 28cm which is wider than many competitors.

1) The edging wheel adds weight to the device and while it can be removed with a screwdriver, it doesn’t have a quick-release button. The extra weight is an annoyance as I don’t do much edging.

2) The handle can be rotated but is fixed to the shaft. Competitors, such as Einhell, have a handle that can be moved up or down the shaft.

3) The cutting head can’t be adjusted, it’s at a fixed angle – a fully adjustable head makes it easier to use for tall or short people.

4) The battery was very slow to charge – 4 hours.

5) Black and Decker’s cordless strimmer is fairly bulky compared to many competitors.

Who I Recommend This Strimmer To

The edging roller is the key selling point, the wheel is big and helps the user create perfectly straight lines.

It’s also suitable for those on a budget and have small gardens or limited areas to cut.

Who I Don’t Think Should Buy This Cordless Strimmer

Those that do little edging or have huge gardens – the slow battery charger could be a deal breaker as not everyone can wait 4+ hours between each cutting session.

What I Tested

I tested the following 6 areas:

  1. Comfort, weight, balance etc
  2. Battery life and charge time
  3. Effectiveness on grass and weeds
  4. Edging ability and other features
  5. Ease of assembly, use and storage

1) Comfort, Weight and Balance

I found this Black and Decker cordless strimmer slightly on the heavy side (2.6kg), partly due to the roller wheel fixed to the end of the shaft. While this feature is handy, it does upset the balance somewhat. The wheel can be removed, but that does require a screwdriver – a quick-release feature here would have been nice.

Otherwise, the strimmer is ergonomic with a well-shaped primary handle and a partially adjustable secondary handle.

The secondary handle is fixed to the shaft, and while it can be adjusted (forwards or backwards), it can’t be slid up or down the shaft – a feature I liked on the Einhell strimmer I also tested.

The shaft is telescopic, which will aid those tall or short.

I’m 6ft2 and feel that anyone taller than I may struggle to use this strimmer comfortably over long periods of time.

2) Battery Life and Charge Time

During my testing, I found that the strimmer’s battery lasted 34 minutes on the ECO setting and 24 minutes on full power.

This Black and Decker cordless strimmer came with a slow charger which took just under 4 hours to fully charge a depleted battery at the first charge and 3 hours for the second charge.

3) Effectiveness

The cutting width is 28cm which is about right for a strimmer at this power range.

Like most 18v strimmers, this Black and Decker device effortlessly cuts through short and medium-length grass.

Longer grass can be strimmed but will require more than one pass.

Weeds can be strimmed but I found it struggled with brambles and anything thicker.

Black and Decker do produce 36v strimmers and these will have more power to chomp through thicker grass and weeds.

4) Edging Ability and Other Features

This is where the Black and Decker strimmer comes into its own.

The edging wheel allows the user to rest the device whilst cutting neat edges and lines in the grass.

I found it very easy to switch from regular strimming to edging; I twisted the shaft until it locked in place, and that was it; the strimmer was ready to go.

The wheel really did make a huge difference and was quite literally a weight off my shoulders.

If you have lots of edging to do, I recommend a strimmer with a guide wheel; it just makes the whole exercise easy.

The battery was easy to insert and pull out, and the spool can be released in seconds by squeezing the two buttons; no tools are required.

Winding new line into the existing spool is easy (the spool takes 0.65mm line only).

This strimmer doesn’t come with a flower guard, which is a metal rail used to gauge the distance from flowers and edges etc.

5) Ease of Assembly, Use and Storage etc

I found the strimmer easy to assemble, the spool was already in place, I just had to insert the guard and use a screwdriver to tighten a screw that held it in place. Clipping the battery into the device was easy and took seconds. The entire strimmer was ready to go within a few minutes of me opening the box.

The telescopic shaft only extends the device by about 30cm but can be collapsed to reduce the size of the device for storage.

I found the device easy to use, if somewhat bulky compared to the Einhell strimmer which was my #1 choice of all the strimmers I tested.

I would have liked to see a quick-release button for the wheel as it adds bulk/weight and I rarely use it as I don’t do much edging.

A shoulder strap would have been a nice feature for longer strimming sessions but maybe I’m asking too much at this price range.

Tip

Black and Decker sell two versions of this cordless strimmer.

One is a bare unit excluding the battery and charger which the other version includes.

You may wish to double-check before you have chosen the correct version when ordering.

Do I Recommend The Black and Decker Cordless Strimmer?

I recommend this strimmer to those on a budget who will do a lot of edging and who won’t be doing more than 25 minutes of strimming in one session – it only comes with one battery and a slow charger (3+ hours).

Alternative Strimmers

I’ve tested several cordless strimmers and found the Einhell strimmer lighter and less bulky, but it lacked an edging wheel. However, the fast charger was a bonus as it took less than 50 mins to fully charge a battery.

Cordless strimmers offer gardeners many benefits, but sheer power and grunt isn’t one of them. This Black and Decker strimmer comes with a standard 18v battery which is fine for light tasks but if you need more power, consider upgrading to the 36v version.

It’s worth noting that cordless strimmers are all weaker than cabled strimmers, so if you have a small garden and don’t mind the inconvenience of a cable, consider an electric strimmer.

Petrol strimmers are perfect for covering huge areas, and they produce enough power to cut through all known grasses and weeds but are heavy, bulky and expensive.
